This piece for Cantonese and vibraphone was commissioned by Hong Kong-based Canadian percussionist HoiTong Keung. As I don't speak Cantonese, and in order for the audience to approach the Cantonese text as part of the music rather than as a language, I deliberately used Cantonese tongue twisters as the text. The tongue twisters were chosen on the basis of their pronunciation, and are as follows : 1. Ying and Ming gwok3 oi2 ming4 gin3 gwo3 gwok3 ho2 ying4 wa6 gwok3 ho2 ying4 go3 doi2 ying4 gwok3 ho2 ying4 giu3 gwok3 oi2 ming4 gwo3 hoi2 goi2 go3 doi2 ying4 goi2 sing4 gwok3 ho2 ying4 go3 doi2 ge3 doi2 ying4 2. For the same pronunciation, different pitches have different meanings. The characteristics of each pronunciation are linked to the characteristics of the vibraphone techniques that represent each movement.
